Quilters Dream Green Batting

January 22, 2016 By Not Just Quiltz

Have you used our Quilters Dream Green batting before? If you have, how do you like it? I am becoming more and more sold on this batting the more I use it for our customers and ourselves in our sample quilts. There are several reasons for this.

  1. It is inexpensive. Because it is made of recycled plastic drinking bottles, the fiber is manmade using something we would normally throw away.
  2. It is soft. You may think that because Dream Green is made from plastic that it would feel stiff like plastic.  It doesn’t.  It is soft as any polyester fiber.
  3. It adds loft and dimension to the quilting. In the photo of the Aboriginal quilt by Melinda P., you can see the quilting of Anita Shakelford’s pattern “Modern Dew Drops Curved.” I was very pleased with the outcome as was Melinda.

M Pickens quilt bSo you see, there are 3 great reasons to try Dream Green in your next quilt. If you quilt your own quilts, you can just buy the batting. It comes in sizes from craft (36” x 46”) for $7.95 to king (120” x 120”) at $29.95. Why not give Dream Green a try?  If we don’t have the size you need, we can order it for you.

See you soon,
Nancy

Aboriginal Artists Series – Part 2

November 16, 2015 By Not Just Quiltz

Our next featured artist is Christine Doolan. Like so many of the Aboriginal artists, she learned her art from family members and, as such, is part of the famous Doolan family. Her art is both bold and neat. Many of her pieces are on display at art galleries in Alice Springs. Let’s look at two of her designs:

  1. Wild Flora: This pattern is based on the Northern Territory of Australia. It’s a beautiful place. A semi-desert, however, you can see the greenery of nature along the MacDonald range. A good winter rain will bring out many colorful flowers everywhere. This pattern depicts the wild flowers beautifully in all three color ways.
  2. Fresh Life After Rain: Central Australia is a semi-desert area, also. Rainfall is, therefore, very rare. Vegetation is not plentiful, but after several months Alice Springs gets a good rainfall. Suddenly, the area comes alive with wildflowers everywhere. The entire territory gets new life. You’re greeted with an amazing array of colors, such as yellow, purple, red, green and much more. This is captured in Fresh Life After Rain with great imagination and artwork.

Proper Preparation of Fabric before Quilting

November 15, 2015 By Not Just Quiltz

We usually recommend that you pre-wash your batik fabrics before you put them in your quilt. Batiks are handmade and can often have dye and/or wax left on the surface of the fabric. For that reason, we recommend that you pre-wash your batiks in cool water with a soap made for keeping the dye from depositing on other fabrics in the wash such as Synthrapol. Just a capful of Synthrapol in your water will be enough to keep the dye from transferring to other fabrics. Dry in a low temperature dryer. This procedure will prevent any dye transfer when you wash your completed quilt. NotJustQuiltZ always has Synthrapol in a 4 oz. bottle for $2.95 each.

Aboriginal Artists Series – Part 1

November 8, 2015 By Not Just Quiltz

Let’s begin our series by way of some background. We feature fabrics from M&S Textiles Australia, the largest manufacturer of Australian Aboriginal designs printed on good quality 100% cotton fabric.

Aboriginal artworks are popular throughout the world and the only living ancient artworks apotheke-zag.de. Its tradition goes back 50,000 years as revealed by carbon dating of rock paintings, cave paintings and so forth.   What’s amazing is that many of their artists have no formal art education or training. Their skills and artistry are handed down generation to generation.

Aboriginal artist Nambooka is very skilled and well known, becoming almost a household name for her bold and colorful designs. We’ll touch on just two of her designs today.

  1. Untitled: It depicts the crosswire. It is available in several color ways. It is a soothing pattern that can be mixed with other more colorful fabrics.
  2. Bambilla: This fabric depicts the flying glider at night which is the symbol of strength. It also portrays the spiritual world in the eyes of native Australians. Her work is well known in Victoria, by craft lovers, art enthusiasts and quilters. They all value and accept her artwork.

June 2015 News & Events

June 1, 2015 By Not Just Quiltz

200x200_2015_circle_cleanpngMark your calendars. The Row By Row Experience officially starts June 21 with a theme of water and ends September 8. NotJustQuiltZ is a participating store.

It’s simple to participate. Visit www.rowbyrowexperience.com and look up the list of shops by state. Each participating shop will have a free pattern for a 9 ½” h x 36 ½” w row. They will also have kits of their sample row. Collect all the patterns you want from whatever state/city you visit. When you have at least 8 rows and have make them into a complete quilt (quilted and bound), bring the quilt into one of the shops and if you are the first to bring in a completed quilt with 8 rows, you will receive 25 fat quarters! If you bring the quilt into a shop whose row is included, you’ll get an extra bonus. Remember, while you’re collecting your rows, look for the fabric license plates offered by many stores—they are so cute! Just think what a license plate quilt would look like…
